Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit Route offers one of the most immersive Kilimanjaro experiences, with nearly 360-degree panoramic views and a serene, less-traveled path. As the longest route, it provides superior acclimatization, greatly enhancing summit success rates. However, its summit day is the longest and most demanding, with an extended ascent from School Hut to Uhuru Peak, making it more challenging than routes like Machame or Marangu.

This route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, starting with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. The journey begins with two days of trekking through the lush rainforest, leading up to Shira Ridge and across the stunning Shira Plateau. From there, the path veers north, looping clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp and then to School Hut. The summit push comes from the east, with the descent following the Mweka route.

Mateys Wild Tours offers the Northern Circuit as a 9-day group climb or as an 8 to 10-day private climb.

Expert Advice

For the best experience on the Northern Circuit Route, the 9-day itinerary is the recommended standard, offering an ideal balance between acclimatization and summit success. The 8-day option is a faster alternative but skips key acclimatization points, making it more challenging. The 10-day “daytime summit” variation eliminates the cold and windy midnight ascent, providing a more comfortable climb but without the iconic sunrise at the summit. Adventurous climbers can opt for the Lemosho Crater variation, which includes an overnight stay at Crater Camp for a unique high-altitude experience. Choose the itinerary that best suits your fitness, acclimatization needs, and adventure goals.

How much does it cost?
Our 9-day group climb costs $3,300 per person. Prices may vary based on the services included.
