Machame Route

The Machame route, affectionately known as the “Whiskey” route, remains Kilimanjaro’s most popular path. Its charm lies in the stunning scenery along the way. However, the trail is known for being difficult, steep, and challenging—especially due to its shorter schedule. This makes it a better fit for adventurous travelers or those with some high-altitude, hiking, or backpacking experience.

The journey begins with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where the route leads hikers through the lush rainforest toward the Shira Plateau. At this point, several of Kilimanjaro’s routes intersect. From there, the path veers east, winding beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field along the Southern Circuit. The final ascent is made from Barafu, and the descent follows the Mweka route.
